"5th BOMB.GROUP BOMBER BARONS"
- This Type M-1943 field jacket with patches and paints is reproduced by "Buzz Rickson's", based on vintage jackets. The 5th Bombardment Squadron, “Bomber Barons,” formed in 1918, is the oldest bomber squadron in the history of the U.S. Air Force. Prior to World War II, it was stationed in Hawaii, where it engaged in activities such as training and participating in Army and Navy maneuvers. During the 1935 eruption of Mauna Loa, they saved the citizens of Hilo, Hawaii, by dropping bombs around the volcano to divert the lava away from the city. The 31st Bombardment Squadron boasts a record of 40 missions flown with B-17 and B-24 bombers. The “Lady Luck” painted on the back is a playful pun combining “Ready Luck” (meaning “to bring good luck”) with “Lady,” showcasing a witty sense of humor. Although this is an Army field jacket, regulations were relaxed during wartime, and on rare occasions, it was worn by airmen.
